Dr Appa Rao says, the University is broadening its domain by spreading the wings from contemporary Engineering courses to more society oriented courses like Life Sciences and Health. This academic year we are starting MS – Sports Science and Technology. According to Dr. S. Bakhtiar Choudhary, today there is an increasing emphasis on adopting sports or physical exercise as an integral part of one’s life to maintain positive health, but there is a gross dearth of trained sports specialists in the country. We have hardly two institutions offering courses in sports medicine. The available sports medicine specialists can support a handful of sports enthusiasts and professionals. A country wanting nothing less than an Olympic medal can’t fulfill its dream without focusing on appropriate research & development and sustained scientific effort in sports medicine, he added. Ms Purnima Rao says “I wish, I had all this knowledge and support in the beginning of my career.
The University intends to invite sports icons like Sachin Tendulkar, Saina Nehwal, V. V. S. Laxman, Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath and others from different fields as members of Board of Studies to popularize this course. The University also proposes to have affiliation with foreign universities for this course and extend it duration to three years, especially for medical doctors. JNTU, Kakinada also has plans to start MS occupational health and safety and several short term diploma courses under the umbrella of School of Life Sciences.
