Hyderabad: Dr. R. Chidambaram, Chancellor of University of Hyderabad inaugurated the ACRHEM building on his maiden visit to the University after being appointed as its Chancellor. Present on this occasion were Prof. Seyed E Hasnain, Vice Chancellor of UoH, Deans, Heads and Coordinators of the Schools, Departments and Centres operating in the campus. Dr. Chidambaram also had an interaction with the officials of the University and was given a first hand account of the activities being carried out at the University. Dr. Rajagopala Chidambaram is the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India and former Director of India’s primary nuclear research facility, BARC. Dr. Chidambaram played a key role in the 1974 Peaceful Nuclear Explosion Experiment at Pokaran and led the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) team in the Pokhran-II tests in May, 1998. Dr. Chidambaram is also one of the members of IAEA’s ‘Commission of Eminent Persons’. He also played an important role in getting the Safeguards Agreement passed by the Board of IAEA that followed the signing of the Civilian Nuclear Cooperation Agreement between India and the United States of America.The ACRHEM building is a two floor building with a total area of 31,600 sq. feet. Built under the Xth plan campus development grant, this building costs more than Rs: 3 crores. ACRHEM is a DRDO supported Advanced Centre of Research in High Energy Materials, at the University of Hyderabad. This is the first Centre of its kind by DRDO in an Academic Institution. ACRHEM conducts Ph. D Programmes in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer and Information Sciences.
Advanced Centre of Research in High Energy Materials is an interdisciplinary research effort working towards understanding of theoretical/experimental aspects in the areas of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics & Statistics of processes, Photonics/Electronics instrumentation involved in High Energy Materials. ACRHEM is in the process of developing state of the art research facilities and techniques for perceiving the properties of high energy materials (HEMs) through experiments with lasers, theoretical calculations and modeling, synthesis of novel HEMs and nano-energetics. ACRHEM also aims for quality teaching with student-faculty ratio highly favorable for individual attention. The centre has various ongoing research programs in experimental and theoretical fields to train Ph.D. scholars in the areas of fundamental and applied fields of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics & Statistics, Materials/Electronics and Photonics instrumentation.
