Osmania University was established in the year 1918 in the city
of Hyderabad.It is one of the oldest and largest institutions of
higher learning in India.It has a vast sprawling campus of 1600
acres and is set in picturesque and idyllic surroundings.
Buildings of great architectural elegance and variety,
enhance its beauty.
Osmania University is a multi faculty ,multi-campus, semi-
residential and affiliating university with more than 1100
faculty and about 3000 non-teaching staff on rolls. The
student enrolment in the University is 2.00 lakhs.Girl students
account for 40% of the total enrolment.
The University
offers various undergraduate, post graduate, research &
professional programmes through a network of seven campus
colleges, six constituent colleges eight district Postgraduate
colleges (directly administered by the University) and more than
400 affiliated colleges (comprising Government, Aided and Self-
financing institutions) spread over the twin cities of Hyderabad
and Secunderabad and five districts of the Telangana Region
in Andhra Pradesh viz., Rangareddy, Medak, Nizamabad, Nalgonda
and Mahabubnagar covering an area of about 60,000 sq.km.with a
population of nearly twenty millions.
There are nine faculties and sixty academic departments offering
more than 100 wide-ranging courses of study and subject
specializations at different levels. Besides, the
University has set up a number of specialized research and
training centre, resource and extension centre and advanced
centers of excellence in emerging areas of human
concern and social relevance. It has a vast potential for growth
and development given its physical extent as well as its
academic diversity and comprehensiveness.
Mission objectives
The Mission objectives of the University are:
To meet the short and long term manpower needs for social
economic development in the regional and context, trough
teaching research, extension and consultancy;
To empower youth by imparting appropriate skills and by
promoting scientific temper, scholarship and excellence through
teaching and research; and to preserve and promote Indian
culture and heritage.

The University offers wide-ranging academic programmes and
courses of study as listed below. it was the first
university in India to introduce General education course as a
compulsory subject at the graduation level in all institutions-
both constituent and affiliated. It also instituted a special
course in B.A., B.Com., B.Sc. programmes in the
University colleges. It is one of the first universities in the
country to introduce
the UGC sponsored restructured courses at the first degree level
to make them socially relevant to the local needs like dairy
farming, forestry, fisheries, electronics and rural banking.As a
part of the UGC scheme of Vocationalization of the first degree
course, the University introduced a large number of
employment-oriented subjects/combinations in B.A.,B.Com.,&B.Sc.
programmes such as Industrial Chemistry, Applied Nutrition,
Computers, Advertising, Sales Promotion, Translation, Etc.
There is an ovewhelming response to these courses from students.

Admissions to first-degree programmes (non-technical) is based
on merit as
manifested in the relevant pre-degree course. At the
Post-graduate level
admission is through entrance test in the relevant subject/s.
Admission to
proffessional/technical courses like B.E./B.Tech./B.Pharma,
L.L.B.,B.Ed.,M.B.A.,&M.C.A.
is throuhg the state wide common entrance tests. Merit obtained
at Graduate
Aptitude Test for Engineering (GATE) is the criterion of
admission to
post Graduate couses in Engineering& Technology. The
university is providing
concessions and subsidezed education to the disadvateged
communities. Further,
to encourage women's education, the University provides a reserve.
