INTERVIEW: Global Education Locally, in line with changing trends: GITAM University Vice Chancellor Subrahmanyam

In this context G.Subrahmanyam, Vice-Chancellor of Gitam University, has talked to He dwelt at length on the transparent and speedy admission process the university has been undertaking during the last two years. The university strictly goes by merit, of course, without ignoring the rule of reservation. The following are extracts of the interview’s Ramya C has with G.Subrahmanyam.

-Can you tell us more about the online test?
We have been conducting this online test for the last two academic years to ensure a transparent and speedy admission process. For every seat, there were 15 applications last year. This year, we are expecting a ratio of 1:25.
The results of the test can be known immediately, once they are completed. Students are then admitted based on merit, following the rule of reservation.
While the eligibility for B.Tech programmes is a minimum of 60 per cent aggregate marks in the intermediate, a minimum of 50 per cent marks in the qualifying exams is prescribed for M.Tech, M. Pharmacy, MBA and MHRM admission. Students with 50 per cent marks in any degree with mathematics at Degree or +2 level are eligibile for MCA.

-Why should a student choose Gitam University?

-Do you offer any fee concession to merit students?

The university sets aside Rs. 2. 5 crore every year to encourage meritorious students. While the 10 top rankers of the B. Tech and B. Pharmacy stream in Gitam Admission Test are given a 100 per cent fee waiver, the 11 to 100 rankers are offered a fee waiver of 50 per cent. The 4th to 10th rankholders of PGM, including MBA, MHRM, PGDARIM, and MSC, are given a fee concession of 50 per cent. In addition to this, 5 per cent merit-cum-means scholarships are given to students of all the programmes, besides student fellowships to 10 per cent of M. Tech and M Pharmacy students.

-Does Gitam charge any donations or any other capitation fee for admissions?

No, we do not take donations for any course in any stream.

-What are the courses offered on different campuses?

We are currently offering undergraduate, postgraduate programmes and Ph.D programmes in the streams of Engineering, Management and Sciences, besides a bachelors degree in pharmacy on the Visakhapatnam Campus. Hyderabad campus, which is an off-campus, is currently offering Bachelors programmes in Engineering. With research as one of the top priorities at Gitam, we recently set up centres on integrated rural research and climate change and disaster management.

-Are there any additional courses being offered this year?

We are going to introduce M. Pharmacy programme with specialisation in pharmaceutical analysis & quality assurance, pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacology during next academic year. A B.Tech programme in industrial engineering is also being introduced in accordance with the industry requirements at the Visakhapatnam campus.
The Hyderabad campus will offer B.Tech programmes in computer science & engineering, IT, electronics and communication engineering, electrical electronics engineering, MBA and MCA.

-Do you have any plans to open new campuses?

Yes, we have plans to set up campuses in other places also. But, presently our focus is on developing the Hyderabad campus to attain the expected standards. We are planning to have our campuses in Orissa and Karnataka also.

-Are you planning to introduce any Arts courses for students?

We are currently offering arts streams like BA, MA and B. Com through the mode of distance education. We don’t have any plans to introduce any more arts courses in the near future.

-What is your take on deemed Universities?

The deemed status enables universities to improve their standards. Most importantly, all the constraints in affiliation can be overcome once the institution acquires the status. There is more flexibility for us now in academic activities. For example, the university is now able to design and restructure its curriculum according to the global needs and aspirations of students as well as the industry.

-The test is scheduled to be conducted from April 16 to May 5.
-The students can choose a date and slot of their choice across the 15 centres in India. -The application can be downloaded online at or can be obtained from selected branches of Union Bank of India, Axis Bank and Indian Bank.
-The last date for the receipt of application forms is March 15 next.
-Hall tickets will be issued from March 25.
-The online test dates are from April 16 to May 5.
